The Kenya Navy has explained why it was forced to shoot dead a 19-year-old cyclist at KD area in Mtongwe on Wednesday.

"At around 6am a motorcyclist was flagged down by sentries to identify himself but forcefully proceeded towards the main gate at a high speed," Kenya Navy said in a statement.

The Kenya Navy said the intruder, identified as Leonard Komora Munene, forcefully proceeded on even after a warning shot was fired.

"This prompted one of the soldiers on guard to fire two direct shots at the intruder to attempt to immobilise him but he succumbed to his injuries," they said.

"Investigations with all the relevant agencies regarding the incident have commenced in order to establish the motive behind the attempted forceful entry." 

The body of Munene was taken to the Coast General mortuary.

The deceased had completed form four last year.

Bodaboda operators in Mtongwe claimed that cases of harassment in the area by Kenya Navy officers are high.

On Sunday, some were forced to walk naked when they were found at KD area at night.

They want the government to intervene and investigate the circumstances under which the young man was shot.
