Five people were killed in a grisly road accident at Man Eaters along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Taita Taveta county.

The Wednesday accident involved a 14-seater matatu and a lorry.

10 people were rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi with serious injuries.

Voi subcounty County Police Commander Bernastein Shali told the Star that the Mombasa bound Nissan matatu rammed into a lorry killing four people on the spot.

Another person died while receiving treatment at Moi Hospital.

“It was so unfortunate that we lost lives following road carnage. The matatu was ferrying people from Murang’a to Mombasa while the lorry was heading to Nairobi. We suspect that the driver was tired because of the long journey,” Shali said.

It is alleged that the matatu was attempting to overtake before colliding with an oncoming lorry.

The bodies were transferred to the Moi County Referral Hospital morgue.

Shali said the police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

He warned the heavy downpour that is being experienced in the area might adversely affect visibility.

"The area is a black spot and we urge all road users to exercise caution so as to avoid such grisly accidents," he added.
