A Kakamega man has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend.
Elly Masiti, 23, was found within the locality after he had fled. The incident occurred at Khayega market on Wednesday night. The deceased, Peninah Nanjala, 22, was a security guard at the Khayega post office.
Masiti allegedly stabbed her in the neck before slitting her throat. Kakamega county police commander Bernard Muli said investigations had been launched.
Neighbours described Peninah as a friendly and jovial person. She had relocated to the residential building two weeks ago. They said Masiti had openly threatened to kill her.
"She had earlier come and asked a neighbour to allow her to spend a night with her since her house was leaking and had flooded water following heavy rains pounding the area," Mary Shihodo said.
"I was sleeping when I had shouts outside that he had killed her. When I came out, I found the compound full of people, including police officers, and saw her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood in her veranda."
Another witness, Tom Lumumba, said Peninah was preparing her supper when the assailant struck.
"I saw the suspect fleeing from the gate. I was walking back to the house but did not know he had killed the girl. I learnt that he had killed the girl when I arrived at home. When we entered the deceased's house, we found water boiling on the stove, with a packet of flour beside it," he said.
Some residents said Masiti had also attempted to burn the deceased in her earlier house. They said he doused it with petrol. Peninah escaped and opted to relocate.
Godrick Amule, next-door neighbour, said he had the deceased cry for help and when he rushed out he saw the assailant fleeing. "I tried to follow him and when I whipped him with a lash he grabbed it and attempted to snatch it from me. I panicked and retreated as he fled," he said.
