The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has been closed indefinitely after students went on a rampage on Wednesday.

The students were protesting the university's memo stating that no learner will be allowed to sit exams without clearing their fee arrears.

More than 10 students were arrested and scores injured following the protests. Kakamega Central police boss David Kabena confirmed the arrests, saying the students were not cleared to hold a demonstration.

He said those arrested were found destroying property. Property of unknown value was destroyed as students engaged anti-riot police in running battles. They hurled stones at the police and caused a traffic snarl-up along the Kakamega-Webuye road.

They also smashed windscreens and window glasses of vehicles, including a van belonging to the university.

“The University Special Senate meeting held today September 18 has resolved to close the university with immediate effect because of the students’ unrest," a memo signed by the acting registrar for academic affairs Professor Thomas Sakwa stated.

All students were instructed to vacate the university premises by 2.00 pm, barely an hour after the memo was issued.

In the previous memo, the university said any student who does not clear their fee arrears would be deferred.

The students also claimed that the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system portal has been down for some time, thus inconveniencing those who depend on donor funding.

As such, they said they were unable to access their result slips which are only downloaded through the ERP. The slips are needed for donor funding.
