Seventy-nine Kenya Medical Training College Kakamega campus students have finally been registered by the Clinical Officers Council to sit exams in May 2020.

A week ago, the students had complained about delayed registration and were worried that they would have to wait two more years to take the council exam.

In a statement, the institution's chief executive officer Prof Michael Kiptoo said the 79 clinical medicine and surgery students, who sat their qualifying exams in July this year, are due for the COC pre-internship exam.

The CEO said the council conducts indexing for students undertaking clinical medicine in all training institutes and administers the pre-internship examinations before the one-year internship commences.

“Registration and indexing of students is a normal process that is undertaken by the council, being the regulatory body of all the clinical officers to enable them to sit the professional body's examination before they proceed for the internship. This happens twice a year in September and May,” the statement reads.

Kiptoo said after the exams in 2020, the students will be posted for internships by the Ministry of Health.

“Thus the 79 Kakamega campus students will proceed for their internship as scheduled and will not be delayed in any way," he said.

Kiptoo also said KMTC is committed to supporting the government to achieve universal health coverage by 2023 through training professional healthcare providers.
