Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Thursday commissioned 10 hospitals in the county to fulfill his election pledge of providing quality healthcare to residents.

“When I was campaigning in 2013, I promised quality healthcare in keeping with World Health Organization standards. Six years later, we are getting closer and closer to making Machakos the leading county in the provision of quality healthcare,” Mutua said.

The governor said he was pleased to launch the hospitals which were previously classified as health centers. He said new wings had been constructed.

The new wings will be equipped with triage kits, wards, mini-theaters, maternity services, x-ray services and will also undertake cancer screening.  They will also be adequately staffed and open 24/7.

Houses for doctors and other health workers have been constructed and more put up for efficient services.

"We are going to employ more doctors so that all each health center has a medical officer who can perform minor surgeries and also offer higher levels of treatment," he said.

Mutua added, "My people of Machakos were created by the same God who created the people of Japan, the UK, Australia, and even Brazil. I will do whatever it takes so that they can receive similar quality health services.”

“WHO standards require there be a health facility within five kilometers of citizens. This is our target in Machakos.”

The county government has ambulances in every location and Mutua said the vehicles play a critical role in getting patients to health facilities in good time for first aid.

“Because the provision of healthcare is not just about treatment but efficient services in a conducive environment, I direct the Health executive to ensure that things and systems work. I will not condone a casual attitude and the common weakness of disrepair on government facilities,” Mutua said.
