Youth caught stealing food in church dies in police cell

Cleric says that they did not rough up the suspect before taking him to the cops.

Police in Runyenjes are investigating the death of 24-year-old man that occurred in a police cell on Friday. 

The youth, a suspected burglar, was taken to Kigumo AP post in Runyenjes constituency by area residents on Thursday night. 

He was caught stealing foodstuff in a church Kitchen. 

According to a resident who sought anonymity, the young man was waylaid by a church leader who then alerted neighbours. 

Kigumo Salvation Army church sergeant, Dominic Saisi said that his wife Elizabeth Wangui was hiding in the church kitchen when the man broke in to steal food. 

"We alerted neighbours and together we took him to the police post where he was locked in," Saisi said. 

The cleric said that they did not rough up the suspect before taking him to the police. 

"We did not beat or manhandle him, we cannot say we caused him any injuries," he said. 

They were, however, called by officers to the police post on Friday morning to record statements. 

The couple said that the police accused them of beating up the suspect and taking him to the post in a bad state. 

Embu East subcounty deputy police commander Michael Wachira said that they are investigating the matter. 

He said the body of the young man was taken to Runyenjes Level IV Hospital mortuary for a post mortem exam.
