• Says maths, physics teacher epitomises the best in teaching
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday congratulated Kenyan Peter Mokaya Tabichi for scooping the Global Teacher Prize 2019.
Mokaya is a maths and physics teacher in Kericho.
Uhuru praised Tabichi for his good deeds as it emerged he's not only a great teacher but also donates 80 per cent of his pay to keep poor learners in school.
It is an incredible achievement to have been chosen from among 10,000 nominations from across the world, President Kenyatta said.
"We are very, very proud of you. You are a shining example of what the human spirit can achieve, not just for Kenya, not just for Africa but for the world,” Uhuru said.
Uhuru praised Tabichi for his achievements in a deprived school with crowded classes and few textbooks.
“You chose to teach in a remote part of Kenya and chose to transform lives in such situations, " Uhuru said.
Because of your sacrifice, all those children who crossed your path are now fulfilling their full potential," the President said in a speech from State House.
Deputy President William Ruto, in a tweet on Monday, also congratulated Tabichi, saying he has edified the teaching profession.
"Congratulations to Peter Tabichi for winning the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. We celebrate your extraordinary, incredible achievement. Your selfless attitude, hard work and sacrifice epitomise the teaching profession," Ruto wrote.
