Technical and Vocational Training institutions need Sh64 billion to fully support skills delivery, PS Kevit Desai has said.

Desai yesterday said the centres need infrastructure expansion, deployment of enough tutors and more equipment due to rising enrollment.

Enrollment has increased by 130 per cent. The current number of students is about  190,000 in TVET institutions.

“This confirms there is increased interest among our youths to pursue technical training courses,” he said.

The department received Sh15 billion in this financial year from the Sh472 billion allocated for the Education docket.

The PS was speaking when he officiated at an induction forum for Technical Training institutes board members from Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega and Vihiga counties in Kisumu.

Desai said the government will hire 2,000 more trainers for the TVET institutions to reduce acute shortages.

He said the government will also establish 30 new TVET training centres across the country.

The PS said TVET was the biggest game-changer in reducing unemployment in by providing knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that help nurture individuals for self-employment through innovation.

He urged county governments to provide funding for innovative skills delivery at the institutions to realise the Big Four agenda.
