Lawyer Assa Nyakundi who was arrested after shooting his 29-year-old son to death was hospitalised yesterday after he fell ill in his cell at the Muthaiga police station, Nairobi.
The lawyer on Sunday told the police he accidentally shot his 29-year-old son, Joseph, in the chest. He said he was driving home with Joseph, who was in the backseat.
They were heading to their Muthaiga home, at about 1pm, when he stopped to transfer his pistol from a pouch into a holster. He rushed Joseph to the Aga Khan Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Yesterday, Nyakundi was admitted after he fell ill. He had been detained at the police station, pending investigations.
Nyakundi is the defence lawyer for Nyeri senior resident magistrate Pauline Chesang, who has been charged with the murder of her lawyer-husband Robert Chesang. Chesang was murdered in his Lukenya residence, Machakos, on February 17.
Nyakundi is also representing a number of suspects in the National Youth Service scandal II case.
