Police officers on Monday had to lob tear gas to disperse members of the Ekeza Sacco who were holding demos protesting misappropriation of funds by Sacco officials.

The DCI had scheduled sessions with Nairobi and Kiambu residents who thronged their headquarters this morning with fraud complaints against Gakuyo Real Estate, Ekeza Sacco and Gakuyo Investment Club.

The more than 50 members chanted "Haki Yetu" as they protested in the demos which turned chaotic at the DCI premises.

Majority of the members said they do not have faith in the DCI adding that the forms they were told to fill are not helpful.

"When I am told to put a phone number in this form. Will the DCI call me? We want the government to address this issue right now. These documents are unnecessary," Patrick, one of the members said.

Another member Mary said, "We have been here since morning. We have not been told anything about our money. We need our money that's all not these documents."

"We have filled the forms and we don't know why we have filled them. We just need our money."

The woman added that they will go to Interior CS Fred Matiangi and later to ODM leader Raila Odinga who will then help them out.

The protests led to a major traffic snarl up along Kiambu road.

Last week, the Gakuyo Real Estate Company owned by controversial city bishop David Kariuki Ngare wanted Commissioner of Cooperatives stopped from penalising it over alleged misappropriation of funds in Ekeza Sacco.

The real estate company and the bishop filed restraining orders under a certificate of urgency against the Commissioner of Cooperatives, Attorney General and Ekeza Sacco, saying recommendation to surcharge the firm based on audit report prepared by a team appointed by Commissioner for Cooperatives Mary Mungai is unprocedural and ill-intended.

An audit report into Ekeza Sacco revealed that the evangelist transferred Sh1.5 billion from the troubled Sacco to his personal account.
