They will serve three years in jail if they fail to raise the fine.

Faith Chebet and Faith Chepkorir were accused of hiring Elena Tereget to perform the cut on November 22, 2017, in Kutete village Narok West sub county.

They were arrested following a tip from wananchi to local administrators and police.

Chepkorir told Narok chief magistrate Wilbroda Juma she regrets her action and asked for leniency, saying she takes care of her late brother’s children.

She added that she sells water for a living

But Juma ruled that FGM is common in the area and ordered her to pay Sh200,000 or serve three years in jail.

Chebet was found guilty after a medical report showed she had undergone the cut.

She said she regretted undergoing FGM and vowed never to repeat it.

The women have 14 days to appeal.
