Form One admissions proceeded smoothly in Kisumu on Monday.

Many students were dressed in their primary school uniforms.

Learners who sat KCPE will report to national, extra-county, county and subcounty schools countrywide starting Monday.

Parents and students reported to school as early as 6am.

At Maseno High School, parents and students sat in the school compound with their boxes and bedding as they waited for their numbers to be called.

The school will admit more than 480 students.

Davis Mulimi, a parent, said he was happy to see his son transition into secondary school.

The admission procedure included verification of documents such as admission letter, confirmation of payments and finally handing out of an admission card.

At Kisumu Girls High School and Kisumu Boys, the admission process was equally smooth.

Kisumu Girls student Jennifer Mary said she was admitted to the school of her dreams.

Admissions will go on until Friday with the Education ministry directing its officials to file daily reports.

There had been confusion on admission following a directive that no admissions would be allowed outside the National Education Management Information System (Nemis), but the order was rescinded with students allowed to register once they reach school.

The order had barred principals from admitting students, claiming they did not have the power to do so.

After a public uproar, Education PS Belio Kipsang’ allowed school principals to admit students as long as their details are captured in the new digital system.

He directed all principals who may have issued hard-copy letters to parents to regularise the process by uploading the students’ details onto the online system to fast-track the process of validation and approval.

The purpose of online admission, the ministry said, is to create a complete database for all students joining secondary school.

Education CS Amina Mohamed said the government is keen to ensure all learners who sat the KCPE exam transition to secondary school.

“After the successful execution of the Form One selection process, the next phase is to actualise the government policy of 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary school,” she said.

The CS will visit schools this week to monitor progress in admissions.
