Police arrested a man with 11 pieces of ivory weighing 55kg at a forest in Tsangatsini, Kaloleni subcounty, on Tuesday.

Police estimate the ivory to be worth Sh5.5 million.

Acting on a tip off that there were two men selling elephant tusks, police with Kenya Wildlife Service officers from Mombasa posed as buyers before nabbing one of the two at 4pm.

Police identified the man as Changawa Koi Kaisha, 55.

On arrival in Kaloleni town, police laid a trap by sending someone to the forest as a buyer.

"After negotiations, the would-be buyer told the two he had returned to fetch the agreed amount, but went back with police," Kaloleni OCPD Kennedy Osando said.

Kaisha's accomplice escaped.

Police believe the two were a dealer and a poacher.

Kaisha is being held at Mariakani police station awaiting court appearance on Wednesday.
