Security has been restored in Giriftu town and neighbouring settlements in Wajir West constituency following days of clashes and tension that led to four deaths.

Last week, two clans fought over a well and settlement, each accusing the other of settling in the area to use the limited resources.

It all started when armed men attacked Garse Koftu, killing two men.In retaliation, an expectant woman was killed.

Other areas that have been affected include Hadado, Qara and Shandarua in Wajir West. County commissioner Lyford Kibaara has been chairing a meeting with the county security team and leaders, including Ggovernor Mohamed Abdi.

On Saturday, the leaders met the two communities to get to the root cause of the conflict. Abdi expressed optimism the resolutions reached will bring lasting peace. The resolutions include equitable sharing of resources and heavy penalties for those who default.

“I want to make a passionate appeal to our communities to accept to live side by side and use nonviolent forms to manage conflict when they arise. We are all brothers and sisters and we will remain neighbours for centuries to come,” Abdi said.

Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik said the government would not spare anyone fuelling clashes. “The government will not allow innocent lives to be lost and property to be destroyed. We are going for those whom we believe are behind the clashes. They will have their day in court,” she said.

Birik urged residents to coexist peacefully and let the government deal with border and demarcation matters.
