Champions Shujaa have been grouped in Pool ‘A’ for this year’s Safari Sevens alongside 2016 Africa men’s Sevens silver medallists Namibia, United Kingdom’s Apache and Mwamba.
World Sevens Series’ core side Spain are the second seeds and headline Pool ‘B’ which also features 2015 champions Samurai, Red Wailers and Emerging Uganda.
Former core team Portugal are in Pool ‘C’ alongside two-time African champions Uganda, Kenya Morans and Kenya Sevens champions Homeboyz, who won the national Sevens circuit.
Safari Sevens organising committee chairman, Godwin Karuga, said there will be an Under-19 girls’ tournament tomorrow with the veterans tournament being played at Impala on the same day in the evening. The senior women’s tournament will go down on Saturday before the main tournament proper starts on the same day. Karuga said the Kenya Police will deploy officers from different branches to man the three-day extravaganza. Security partner Senaca International will provide round the clock security.
He also said there will be re-routing of traffic on the busy Ngong Road, which is undergoing construction. “There shall be a diversion of regular traffic on Ngong Road near Ole Dume road, and Joseph Kangethe Road. The vehicles will go through Jamhuri estate on Kibera Station road and rejoin Ngong Road past Adams and proceed with their journey.”
Vehicles coming from Dagoretti side shall be re-routed at Swedish School junction at Makindi Road to meet up with Riara Road then flow down to Ole Dume and finally on to Ngong Road. The area between Impala and Telkom will be left for fans on foot and emergency vehicles. The event organisers have managed to secure parking at the junction mall on the Riara Road entrance. The parking space is able to accommodate 250 cars.
