Uhuru flies to Kisumu ahead of Mashujaa Day festivities in Kakamega

President Uhuru Kenyatta flew to Kisumu on Friday evening ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Saturday in Kakamega.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o received the president the the First lady Margaret Kenyatta at the Kisumu airport.

"This evening I received President @UKenyatta at Kisumu International Airport ahead of tomorrow's Mashujaa Day celebrations to held at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega county," Nyong'o said in a tweet.

Officials confirmed on Wednesday that preparations for the festivities are complete.

Security has been enhanced with the presence of KDF around the showground.

Visiting Namibian President Hage Gottfried Geingob will be the guest of honour in this year's fete.

State House spokesperson Kanze Dena was at the weekend in Kakamega to inspect preparations for the celebrations.

Kakamega becomes the fifth county to host the celebrations after Uhuru announced that they will be held in every county on rotational basis to bring the experience to all Kenyans.

The national event has previously been held in the counties of Nakuru, Nyeri, Machakos and Meru.

Mashujaa Day is celebrated on October 20 every year to commemorate heroes and heroines who have made great contributions to the country.

Prior to the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, the day was known as Kenyatta Day in honour of Kenya's founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
