Police have launched a manhunt for al Shabaab militants who ambushed a school in Mandera and killed two teachers.

The terrorists stormed Arabia Boys Secondary School in Mandera on Wednesday at about 1 am and hurled an explosive device at the teachers' quarters. Two teachers, who were in the house, perished.

"All other teachers and students are safe. The hunt for the attackers is ongoing," the police said in a tweet.

There are four non-local teachers in the school.

Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik confirmed the attack. The school’s staffroom was also burnt.

Police reservists, who were guarding the school, engaged the attackers who fled. The reservists called for reinforcement.

The school is situated on the Kenya-Somalia border, which is a terror hotspot.
