Boda boda operators in Lamu have appealed to the county government to lift the ban on their operations saying they are suffering.

The group was ordered out of the town on town as a heritage site.

The riders have been restricted to operate outside the town, a situation they say hurt their earnings amid an increase in fuel prices.

Many have since quit the trade citing incapability to keep up with the tough conditions that came with the ban.

Initially, Lamu town had over 100 boda boda operators but the number has reduced to less than 50.

Bakari Yusuf, Lamu boda boda operators association, said hundreds of youth have been rendered idle following the directive.

He warned that security in the town risks deteriorating as more youths are likely to resort to crime having lost their livelihood.

"Boda boda redeemed many youths from drugs and other sets of crime. Let the county lift the ban," he said on Tuesday.

The operators also asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to compel fuel dealers in the region to adjust their pump prices in line with the latest review.

They claimed the dealers are still charging fuel at the rate inclusive of the 16 per cent despite the same being slashed to eight per cent.

"Petrol stations still sell us a litre at between Sh145 and Sh150. This is too high compared to other areas that have already brought down the prices," said Swabir Ali.

The operators asked the county government to set construct boda boda lanes in the town to enable them to do business without any restrictions.
