Athi River slum fire leaves dozens homeless

Dozens of Sofia slum dwellers were left homeless after a fire gutted their houses in Athi River, Machakos county.

More than 50 structures were razed during the Monday 4am incident.

Those affected said they have lost all their household property ranging from clothing, food, utensils, electronics, among others.

Some told the Star they lost money, school leaving certificates, alongside other documents.

There were no casualties. The Machakos fire brigade put out the fire before it spread to adjacent blocks.

Children of the affected families have not reported to school as they lost books and school uniforms in the fire.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
