The Maa community has renewed its calls for unity under the "Motonyi Declaration" reached during former Cabinet Minister William Ole Ntimama's memorial service.

The community said this amid an attempt to find a suitable person to succeed Ntimama as the community's leader and spokesperson.

The call was made by Environment CS Keriako Tobiko at the late Ntimama's home in Motonyi at the weekend.

All leaders and speakers present noted that despite his physical death, his spirit lives on.

The community is yet to appoint a spokesman, a situation that was hampered by the death of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and veteran politician John Keen.

"This is to be the rallying call for all Maa to stand up against issues affecting the community," Tobiko said reiterating the need for members to rally themselves, whether elected or not.

The message was echoed by Tim Ntimama describing the unity agenda as non-negotiable.

Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta said they "must defend themselves selves against the expansionist phenomena perpetuated by the tanga tanga movement."

Kajiado Central MP Memusi Kanchori vouched for the need to form a Maa party saying: "We must go into the 2022 general election under one umbrella party for all the Maa."

He said this will give them bargaining power for a minimum of the Deputy President's position.

Interior CAS Patrick Ole Ntutu said: "We should unite as a people as proposed by Kajiado leaders. The unity should be devoid of politics with a common goal to develop our people."

Former Tanzanian PM Edward Lowassa condemned the recent ethnic clashes and asked Maa leaders to be on the forefront in preaching peace and unity.

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku hailed CS Tobiko on efforts to restore the Mau ecosystem.
