Education CS Amina Mohamed has appointed Julia Ojiambo as the chairperson of the University of Nairobi council.
In a gazette notice dated September 6, the CS further appointed Wanjiku Muchemi, Flora Maghanga, Jocelyn Rarieya, Hassan Mohamud, and Isaac Kiprop as members.
The lot will serve in the top varsity organ for a three-year period, ending the one-year wait for UON to get a substantive chair.
Prof Ojiambo, an 81-year-old career politician, was among 25 candidates shortlisted for the chair position from a total of 44 applications.
In May last year, former Education CS Fred Matiang'i named Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi as the chair of the UON council replacing Idle Farah. The latter served for 12 years until February 2017.
Ojiambo, a former Funyula MP (1974), was a presidential running-mate in the 2007 general elections. She was the first woman to be appointed Assistant Minister.
For the position of members of the council, a total of 175 candidates submitted their applications of which 122 were shortlisted for interviews.
High Court judge George Odunga on February 13 ruled that recruitment of university councils members and chairpersons must be open, transparent and competitive.
Those seeking the position of a chairperson were required to hold a minimum of educational qualification of a Ph.D. degree from a recognised University.
Members of councils were required to have a minimum of a Masters degree.
