The Kisumu assembly wants more rehabilitation centres opened to decongest Mama Ngina Children’s Home.
The assembly yesterday passed a motion for construction of rehabilitation and transformational centres for street children and families.
Railways MCA David Arao said Mama Ngina Children’s Home, which majorly hosts young children, is overpopulated.
Arao said the number of street children is rising every day.
“If the motion is passed, then many cases of rape, early pregnancy, diseases and harassment by law enforcers on street families will be dealt with,” he said.
Arao said the centres target total orphans, mentally challenged women and homeless children.
He urged the members to compel the Children’s department to build rehabilitation centres in subcounties.
