Nairobi governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday suspended Health CEC Hitan Majevdia and director Thomas Ogaro over laxity in health services provision.

Two days ago, he suspended three other officers, including a close ally. They are accused of misusing public funds.

They are chief of staff Brain Mugo, acting chief finance officer Ekaya Alumasi and acting head of county treasury Stephen Mutua.

Director of communications Elkana Jacob said Majevdia and Ogaro have been given 14 days to explain why services in county hospitals are wanting.

They are on the spot over lack of drugs and other medical supplies in hospitals.

Majevdia confirmed the suspension and said he was informed by County Secretary Peter Kariuki.

He becomes the third executive to be suspended in four months.

In April, the governor suspended Finance CEC Danvas Makori before sacking him in May for allegedly spying for his [Sonko’s] enemies at City Hall.

In June, he suspended Devolution CEC Vesca Kangogo for "insubordination". She reportedly travelled to the US without the governor’s permission.

County-owned health facilities have lacked medicine for two years because of a Sh285 million debt owed to the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency.

Last month, City Hall paid Kemsa Sh58 million, but the agency demanded the full amount before supplying drugs.
