A fire razed a store at Chebara Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet county sparking fears of an arson attack.

A teacher at the school said students were still in their classrooms at the time of the incident.

Marakwet West sub-county director of education Evans Onyancha said the school board of management is currently meeting to establish the cause of the fire and ascertain the value of property lost.

Onyancha said police from a nearby Chebiemit police were called in when the fire started.

"Investigations have already been launched. The school

is deliberating on the next course of action and will give a way forward after the meeting,"

said Onyancha .

He said students who will be found to have started the fire will be arrested and prosecuted.

The education director said the incident has happened at a time when students at the school are doing their end of term examinations.

It was not immediately clear whether the ongoing tests triggered the burning of the store.

The incident is the latest in a series of many others where arsonists have destroyed dormitories in over 47 schools countrywide.

Belio Kipsang reiterated his warning that students who burn property at their schools will face the full force of the law.

About 142 students have been arrested for the arsons and the numbers keep rising.

This is the first school fire to be experienced in the county this year.

St Peters Marakwet Boys Secondary students were sent home after burning a dormitory and vandalizing their classes, staff room and a teacher's car.

They also broke into the head teacher and accounts' offices, where they destroyed items and stole Sh35,000 and took a teacher's laptop and phone.

"Students behind the unrest sneaked out that night to take alcohol," said Onyancha.
