Kenyans on Twitter have faulted Kipchumba Murkomen for dragging ODM leader Raila Odinga's name as having masterminded the Mau Forest evictions.

The commentators asked the legislator, who led Rift Valley MPs for a meeting with Mau evictees on Wednesday, to stop politicising the matter.

The Rift MPs accused the ODM chief of instigating the evictions, attracting heavy criticism from the social media enthusiasts.

Prof James Ole Kiyiapi, a former Education PS, said Mau Forest is a vital ecological system, holding that "conserving it is not about this or that community nor is it a political question."

"It is a matter of grave national interest," Kiyiapi, who was at one time an Environment PS, said.

He asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to give leadership on the matter.

Kipchumba Kemei, another twitter user, warned that the forest risk disappearing if its conservation efforts are politicised.

"Sad to see politicians, one claiming he was sent by Uhuru to tell settlers to go back to the forest, trying to make political capital out of the ongoing clearing of illegal settlements in Maasai Mau forest," he said.

@Ndungugachane tweeted: "Dear @kipmurkomen you have gone wrong your statement today to ethnicise and politicise Mau forest eviction is not only myopic but politics of backwardness! I read bad blood between DP Ruto and the President because you seem to demonise handshake which the DP claimed to be aware of."

@Bryanrotich said: "@kipmurkomen you should be spearheading the eviction of people from Mau forest and not asking them to go back....For once put politics aside and save our forest."

@BernardMunyao challenged the lawmaker to "champion resettlement of evicted people but not to engage in cheap politics!

"Dragging Raila on eviction in Mau Forest is not a solution," the twitter user said.

Gabriel Oguda challenged the media not to focus more on the sound bytes by politicians but rather highlight why the forest should be conserved, largely drawing views from experts.

Other users also warned the legislators against inciting Kenyans against one another.
