A women-only Lions Club has been launched in Thika, Kiambu, to fight alcohol abuse and gender-based violence.
Thika Precious Lions Club was launched in Thika town on Saturday. It is the third in the region  after the Lions Club of Chania Falls and Lions Club Kilimambogo,
Gladys Chania was elected president. “We will focus on capacity building and women’s and community empowerment programmes,” she said.
Chania said voluteers will address environmental issues and assist the community in fighting and managing lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.
Chania said the ‘green club’ will advance the activities of Lions Clubs International, which have been in community service across the globe for 102 years.
The new club will work in collaboration with the Nairobi Karen Lions Club, which is a women-only, but mixed race club.
She said women will complement the efforts by both the national government and the county in the war on illicit liquor and drugs.
“Alcohol and drug abuse havebeen the main reason the community is not developing. Social ills like petty crime, sexual abuse and gender violence are attributed to the vices,” Chania said.
She said  the club is ready to join other like-minded groups and corporates.
Lions Club District Governor 411A Ann Chubi, who is in charge of Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan, said the Thika Precious Lions Club will start work immediately.
“We believe we can and will make remarkable changes in society by identifying and solving problems facing the community. We are not stopping at this, we will launch more clubs to reach as many places as we can,” she said.
Chubi said Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with more than 1.4 million members in 46,000 clubs. Members are from more than 200 countries.
Its headquarters are in Oak Brook, Illinois, in the US.
