Mothers whose children were given the new upgraded polio vaccine have taken to social media to express their worries about "outrageous symptoms".

Lilian, a mum, complained after watching a TV story showing the side effects of the medicine.

She is worried since her daughter had the same symptoms.

"Guys my baby is suffering from the polio vaccine's side effects. I saw the story on TV and when I got home, I found my daughter with similar effects," she told the Star on Thursday.

Lilian rushed her baby to the hospital for fear of complications.

"Most of my daughter's classmates missed school. They have similar symptoms of high fever of over 40 degrees, stomachache ache and diarrhoea. The upgraded polio vaccine should be stopped," she said.

Lilian is not the only mother venting out on social media. Another mum Lucian Sonkoh is equally worried.

More on polio:

She said," Come to think of it, my son got sick after getting the vaccine. He had a high fever and was coughing and vomiting. My niece is also affected."

Another mum, Edith Glory, said, "It is true. Mine is really sick... in fact two of them are vomiting, they have diarrhoea and high temperature."

Kinsy Jena Dile, another mother said,"My daughter alipewa ingine ya door-to-door ile ya kwanza akaanza kupata convulsions." Loosely translated to....my daughter was vaccinated during the first door-to-door vaccination and she started having convulsion.

Another mother Alice Wangari said, "Hiyo polio vaccine ilikuwa na shida. I know more than five children who were affected. My dota anatapika na kuhara [That polio vaccine has a problem. My daughter is vomiting and has diarrhoea]."

Other parents said they had to hide their kids so that they were not vaccinated for fear of side effects.

"Wangu nilimficha, hii ujinga ya polio vaccine mimi sitaki [I hid my child, I didn't want that nonsense of the vaccine]. Every time my nephew was vaccinated, he fell sick for a week," Cynthia Lyn said.

Director of Medical Services Jackson Kioko said the vaccine has more side effects compared to previous ones.

"I had announced that the polio vaccine is safer than what we have used before. What the mothers are not aware of is there might have an influenza outbreak. Mothers should not be worried," he said.

A doctor who is treating one of babies with side effects said nothing should be ruled out. The doctor said it is an inaugural vaccine and is bound to have side effects.

The World Health Organization has said there was a global switch from the trivalent vaccine to bivalent vaccine.

Polio is a serious infectious illness caused by poliovirus. It is spread through contact with the stool of an infected person.

The WHO urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare polio virus eradication a national public health emergency in Kenya.

It wants the emergency status maintained for one year until there is evidence that the transmission has been stopped.

The previous vaccination was done from May 9 to 12.
