Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Wednesday said counties should have strong audit committees to promote prudent financial management.

Lusaka said functional committees would serve as key elements in the governance process by providing independent expert assessments on county activities and projects.

He spoke when he addressed the Council of the Institute of Chartered Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) at his Parliament Buildings Office.

“These committees are critical to ensuring adherence to external audit recommendations and that the quality of the internal audit is above par. Counties should set up these Committees expeditiously,” he said.

On its part, ICPAK noted that in a bid to protect and uphold public interest as well as develop the accountancy profession in Kenya, it was willing and competent to offer capacity building support to the County Governments and the Senate.

“As an institute, we are keen to explore options of training new Senators appointed to finance related and watchdog committees as well as their secretariat to promote accountability in governance,” ICPAK CEO Edwin

Makori said.
