Corruption has raised the cost of doing business in Kenya by 10 per cent and up to 25 per cent that of procurement contracts.

EACC director of field services Vincent Okong'o says

the burden of corruption falls heavily on the poor as they cannot afford to bribe to get basic services like healthcare

and government services.

"Research shows that organized crime and corruption are interrelated. In many cases, bribery is an enabler for the commission of an organized crime such as trade in counterfeits, terrorism, human trafficking and poaching," Okong;o said.

The anti-graft agency on Wednesday said it will

establish integrity clubs and movements in schools to instill uprightness in learning institutions.

“Establishment of integrity clubs and

the introduction of ethics in the curriculum are some of the initiatives the is undertaking in Schools and Colleges to instill Integrity and Ethics in learning,” he said.

“Estimates show that the cost of corruption equals more than 5 per cent of the global GDP (US $ 2.6 trillion), with over US $1 trillion paid in bribes each year,” he said.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has been under pressure, with more corruption cases filling up their offices.

Some of the current heightened corruption cases are the sugar scandal, NYS scandal, Ruaraka land scam and misappropriation of public funds by counties and government institutions.
