Police in Migori on Wednesday nabbed another 4,720 of 50kg bags of sugar enroute to Homa Bay in the ongoing operation on contraband sugar.

The sugar is suspected to have been illegally smuggled into the country.

The sugar which was being ferried in nine trucks was intercepted by the County officials manning Migori-Homa Bay road.

It was branded as that of West Kenya sugar company limited.

West Kenya Sugar, however, denied any link to the semi-raw sugar that has found its way into the market.

According to one of the council officials, the haul was being taken to Sukari Industries in Ndhiwa for repackaging before being supplied to other parts of the country.

The 'No for sale" marked bags had no KEBS marks and it forced the KRA and KEBS officials from Kuria border to be present during the opening of the containers.

According to Sub County deputy commissioner Jonathan Kisaka, the security team who were on patrol got wind of information that some trucks had been intercepted and rushed to investigate.

"When our security team reached the destination the two Indians who were escorting the luggage, however, became open and told us that they were transporting sugar."

The truck drivers who drove the trucks to Rongo Police station vanished mysteriously.
