IPOA has dispatched its Rapid Response Unit to investigate an incident in which two people were shot by police on Sunday.

Head of communications Dennis Oketch said the authority is seeking to establish circumstances of the shooting that has caused an uproar on social media.

"Upon conclusion, the Authority will make recommendations and forward the investigation file to the ODPP for his attention," Oketch said in a statement on Wednesday.

Administration Police Constable William Chirchir from Makadara Police Station and another AP constable, Godfrey Kirui, from Industrial Area Police Station, fired 15 bullets into the vehicle at City park in Parklands.

During the ordeal, the officers killed a woman, Janet Waiyaki, and injured Bernard Chege who was later rushed to Avenue hospital for treatment.

The officers claimed that the two "looked suspicious".

The officers allegedly opened fire when Chege sped off after he was asked to open the car.

But Chege who spoke to the Nation from his hospital bed said they were 'relaxing' at the spot he had frequented before the incident.

The police report claimed that both occupants were half-naked at the time of the incident.

But the family of Waiyaki are asking why she was taken to the City Mortuary half-naked (with only her top) and Chege was fully dressed when he was taken to the hospital.
