KenGen has allayed fears of Masinga Dam overflow despite the water level rising to 1,057.41 meters above sea level on Monday.

The rise was an increase from the 1,057.03 meters above sea level that was recorded on May 18.

KenGen managing director Rebecca Miano said that inflows into Masinga Dam have stabilised.

"We wish to assure Kenyans that we will continue to operate the Seven Forks dams in line with KenGen's efficient water management plan," Miano said in a statement on Monday.

She said Kamburu Dam level was at 1,005.47m, Gitaru (924.09m), Kindaruma (780.09), and Kiambere (700.84m).

The latest recorded overflow volume at Masinga Dam was noted to be 319 cubic meters per second while that of Kiambere was 369.

"These are some of the highest water levels we have seen in the past few years, which has been brought about by the amount of rainfall that we have been receiving this year," Miano said adding that such a pattern was last experienced in 2003.

She added that the overflow at Masinga was at the spillway, which is a safety provision that allows water to flow back to river’s natural course in a controlled manner.

"KenGen will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to provide prompt information on water inflows and levels with a view to facilitating proper management of the situation."

The update comes days after the government urged residents living in near the dam to relocate to avoid any fatalities as earlier report had indicated that there would be a spillage.
