MP Shah Hospital on Wednesday released the body of a woman they had detained over a Sh860,000 bill.

This came as a reprieve to Matilda Anyango's family whose predicament sparked social media uproar.

The woman, 32, died within 12 hours of her admission to the facility after being stabbed by thugs in Kangemi.

MP Shah was put on the spot for detaining the body amid claims they insisted the family had to settle the bill.

It had demanded Sh858,355 from Matilda's family for the 12-hour admission.

In a statement, the hospital dismissed claims that the body was detained due to the family's failure to settle the costs.

Chief operating officer Toseef Din said the patient was admitted without any financial commitment as per the hospital's emergency protocol.

"The hospital bill in question was only an interim one which has since been revised," the official said.

He added that Matilda's family has been given a discount on compassionate grounds. The hospital holds that this had initially been offered to the bereaved family.

Din added that the body has been lying at the hospital mortuary pending post-mortem by the government pathologist.

"Matilda received the best medical care. Every effort was put in place to save her life. She was attended to by all necessary specialists and clinical staff required."

The autopsy was carried out in the presence of the bereaved family, after which they were told they are at liberty to proceed with her burial.
