This year's Madaraka Day celebrations will take place in Meru county, State House has said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto will lead the June 1 celebrations which will be the 55th.

Last year's event took place in Nyeri county.

Madaraka commemorates the day Kenya attained internal self-rule in 1963, preceding full independence from Great Britain on December 12 that year.

Some, however, are of the view that this celebration should end as it seems to have lost its relevance. The reasons include

a dwindling sense of nationalism among citizens.

Kenya’s national holidays have gone through interesting twists and turns since independence in 1963.

For a long time there was very little clarity about what constituted a national holiday and why they were created.
