Gor Mahia will miss the services of holding midfielder Ernest Wendo in their Caf Confederation Cup return leg match against SuperSport United tomorrow at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.
The midfielder accumulated two yellow cards in their previous two continental matches — against Esperance and SuperSport — and head coach Dylan Kerr has termed his absence as a huge blow to his plans.
Kerr said: “It’s a big loss for me and the team to have Wendo at the sidelines. We will miss him. He is not a rough player. I think he is just an aggressive player and it’s unfortunate he was cautioned against Esperance and SuperSport at home.”
“Nonetheless, I am elated to have options on my side where I can throw Philemon Otieno in midfield and have his space at the right back taken by Joachim Oluoch. I also have Humphrey Mieno with me. We have been training for the match and I am happy the boys are ready to fight for qualification to the group stages.”
Wendo has been playing an integral role in shielding the back four. With Gor missing a number of senior players as Wellington Ocheing and Karim Nizigiyimana nurse injuries, the absence of Wendo piles more pressure on Kerr.
In addition, Gor will miss utility man Godffrey Walusimbi, who declined to play for the club until his signing fees is cleared.
“Everything is set for the match. We have identified our hotel and the venue for our training sessions. We are leaving today (yesterday) and we hope the players will get enough resting time before the match which is set for Wednesday night. Walusimbi is not part of the traveling party since we are yet to finalize his issues,” revealed chief executive officer, Ludovick Aduda. At the same time, the national champions were scheduled to jet out last evening for South Africa where they will be seeking to either defend improve on their 1-0 in the first leg played at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.
