Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has launched a Sh300 million college and universities scholarship program in Machakos County.

Mutua said the scholarship program will support the education of 10,000 students from the county but undertaking their studies in various different colleges and universities across the country.

Mutua spoke during the program's official launch at Athi River Youth Polytechnic in Mavoko.

He said the initiative will have an annual budgetary allocation of Sh300 million.

He said his vision is to have a county where an individual's family background does not stand in the way of their dreams and ambitions.

"I dropped out of school at form two due to lack of school fees but later a church elder came to my rescue. Now, I am doing the same for thousands of Machakos youths," Mutua said.

"My plan is to transform Machakos to be the richest and most equitable region in Kenya and Africa," he said.

Mutua said enabling a large number of youths to have professional qualifications is an ingredient of spurring actual socio-economic transformation.

"This scholarship program converts words to actions, " Mutua said.

He announced the commencement of free ECD education in the county with an allocation of Sh1,000 per child.

"We have already employed over 1,200 ECD teachers and will hire 800 more in coming months," he said.
