Three members of a family died instantly after their car was involved in an accident on Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Magina, Lari constituency.

The three were heading towards Nakuru when their vehicle collided with a PSV matatu plying the route.

Mary Wambui, 48, and other family members Gladys Wanjiru, 49, and Jane Njoki, 69, were the casualties.

Wambui's husband Jesse Kamau, who was driving the car, was seriously injured and was rushed to Kijabe Mission Hospital.

Lari OCPD Isaiah Odhiambo said the accident happened at around 8pm on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the vehicle was overtaking when it collided with the matatu before it rolled by the roadside.

"The driver must have underestimated the matatu's speed while overtaking. We only heard the car tyres screech," said Rachel Wanja.

The family is from Kambaa village, Githunguri sub-county in Kiambu and were heading to visit their relatives in Nakuru.
