Twenty women to fight out for LSK positions in Thursday election

At least 20 women lawyers have been cleared to battle it out for positions up for grabs in the Law Society of Kenya elections set for Thursday.

IEBC will manage the election which will see over 9,009 lawyers across the country cast their votes. The vote will be conducted at LSK's cost.

Two of them, Harriet Chigai - currently serving as council member, and Brenda Joy Masinde will fight it out for the vice president's seat.

The society's presidency is a two-horse race between veteran lawyers Allen Waiyaki and James Mwamu.

They are seeking to replace the current president Isaac Okero whose two-year term has come to an end.

Roselyn Odede will face off with Francis Masika for the position of the general member representative of over 25 years experience.

Herine Okoth, Harriet Njoki, Maria Mbeneka, and Wilkister Nyagito will be battling against Eric Theuri and Moses Njoroge for the two positions of the general member representative.

Gladys Wamaitha, Anna Cherono, Grace Akinyi will be taking on Gad Kipkurui, Tom Mutei, Gideon Migiro, Kibira Ocharo, George Ochich and Michaekl Nyongesa for the four-member LSK disciplinary tribunal.

Carolyne Kamende, who is the current chairperson of the Lagos-based Africa Bar Association, will be facing off with Boniface Apamo, Cohen Amanya, Dorothy Jemator, Handa Ekatrina, and George Omwansa for the Nairobi representative.

For LSK upcountry representative, Damaris Ndinda, Jane Jeptoo, Beth Kemunto, Annet Nyukuri will be going against Stephen Odhiambo, Samuel Odhiambo, Bernard Kipkoech and David Njuguna.

Laywer Nelson Havi was blocked by the court on grounds he did not meet the 15-year experience required of chairman candidates.

Waiyaki is a practising lawyer in Nairobi while Mwamu - a former East African Law Society President, practices in Kisumu.

Mwamu was admitted to the bar in 1994 and has also served as an LSK council member.

Wayiyaki was admitted to the bar in 1997.
