Nothing will curtain raise Gor Mahia’s 50th anniversary better than three points when they accost Zoo Kericho in the Kenya Premier League match today at Kericho Green Stadium.
The televised duel will see the on form defending league champions crown their forthcoming birthday with a win while the host will be seeking their first victory of the season.
Zoo were handed tough opening league match, losing to Ulinzi Stars and today, they host on Gor, who reaped Nakumatt 4-0 in their opening match.
The Kericho-based outfit will be seeking their first win over Gor since their elevation to the Premier League a year ago following their 1-0 defeat and a 1-1 draw in last year’s meetings. While Zoo will be eyeing their first win of the season, Gor will be out to topple current league leaders Mathare United from the crest of the standings and a win of any margin will catapult Dylan Kerr’s side to the top.
The hosts welcome Gor aware of their red hot form and their head coach Sammy Okoth has promised to deliver their first win of the season as well as use the match to gauge their reaction towards the 4-2 loss to Ulinzi.
In an interview, Okoth said: “We are playing a team which is on form and has good players but nonetheless, we will give our best and deliver our first point of the season. We lost to Ulinzi because we were slow and never recovered from the time we conceded our first goal. I have since used the time we were not in action to rectify that mistake and today, I will be gauging how best the boys can react. All the players are physically fit and I am looking forward to an evenly balanced game.”
Gor are unbeaten this year and have conceded two goals in the four competitive matches they have played so far. Their 2-0 win over Leones Vegetarinos in the Caf Champions League is viewed as a confidence booster ahead of the league clash.
Zoo sit 17th with a -2 goal difference and should they break their win-less jinx over Gor, they will move six places up in the standings. A win for Gor will aid them recapture the top spot from Mathare United as well as spice up[ their looming 50th birthday set for Saturday.
