Calm returns to Suyian after Samburus, Turkanas agree to peace

Calm returned to Suiyan village in Samburu North after Turkana elders promised to return livestock stolen at the weekend.

Security agents earlier recovered and returned 40 camels belonging to the Turkana community.

Alfred Kinyua, who is Samburu county commissioner, said they brokered a peace deal between the Samburu and Turkana after the animals were handed over to herders.

He said he theft of the camels three weeks ago resulted in retaliatory attacks that saw 2,200 cattle stolen last Friday.

“For peace to prevail between the two communities, they agreed to return the animals they stole from each other," he told the press in Maralal town

on Wednesday.

He added that during the meeting, elders from the two sides agrees to share grazing resources.

The commissioner advised the families of those killed to make a formal complaint at Baragoi police station so investigations are launched.

Kinyua denied claims by local politicians that police officers in the area sleep on their jobs.

"We have deployed enough police officers to Suyian and Marti areas. They will facilitate the return of stolen livestock," he said.

He added they will ensure security.
