Police in Ndhiwa on Thursday arrested a man who was allegedly transporting bhang worth Sh1.13 million.

Fredrick Okoth, 24, was nabbed near Magina trading center on Homa Bay-Rongo Road as he tried to evade a police roadblock.

Homa Bay county police commander Marius Tum said they arrested the man following a tip-off from a member of the public.

"We got information he was ferrying the illegal substance. We waylaid him before blocking his vehicle near Magina market."

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Tum said the suspect pretended that his vehicle had developed mechanical problem before officers manning the roadblock arrested him.

"He cheated most police on the road that he was taking his vehicle to a garage in Homa Bay town only to get his way through."

Tum said the man came from Tanzania but they have not established the destination of the drugs.

"We expect him to help with more insight about the business," he said.
