Assumption sisters have formally taken over the management of St Mary’s Mission hospital in Gilgil.

The new management reported to the hospital at 6am accompanied by a contingent heavily armed police officers.

Audi Morris, a manager at the hospital's branch in Langata, Nairobi, said that the takeover was conducted smoothly.

"It was a very smooth exercise. The takeover is a change that takes place in any other institution."

"However, we have realised there has been vandalism of hospital equipment and stealing some in various departments," he said.

Morris said that no staff will lose their job due to the change of management adding that any other arising issues will be addressed as they crop up.

He said that they acted in compliance with a court order issued by the environment and land court in Nakuru.

Nakuru county police commander Hassan Barua said that police work was only to enforce the court order.

"There was no opposition from the staff and even the locals in taking over the hospital. It was a smooth exercise which lasted an hour," he said.

The commander added that several police officers will be left to man the facility.

Patients and journalists were earlier in the day denied entry to the facility as the new managers made rounds accompanied by the police.

And although services resumed immediately the new management took over, those seeking dental services will have to wait a bit longer.

This was after it emerged that seven dental machines are missing except for the dental x-ray machine.

The machines range from Sh2.5million to Sh15 million each depending on the make and country of origin.

Morris said that measures are being put in place to ensure the dental services resume.

Judge Sila Munyao issued the orders on November 23, 2017 and further enforcing orders on Wednesday this week.

The hospital has been at the centre of controversy over ownership between Bill Fryda William and the assumption sisters.

Fryda lost the seven years court battle but has since filed an appeal.
