Conflicts at the Murang'a assembly have been worsened by the executive which has undermined its independence, two MPs have alleged

Muturi Kigano (Kangema) and Alice Wahome (Kandara) did not mention names on Thursday but condemned the wars that began a fortnight ago.

Wahome said the conflict was being fuelled by individuals with "personal or isolated interests that cannot advance the county forward".

"The independence of the assembly must be encouraged, enhanced and respected," she said.

"Normally, there is a line between the executive and the assembly but they must find a way of working without undermining each other and making the assembly ineffective."

Wahome criticised Jubilee Party leaders for "issuing certain letters and taking positions".

On Wednesday, Jubilee secretary general Raphael Tuju nullified changes in the House leadership that triggered the fights.

Tuju said the party disciplinary committee will decide the actions to take against offenders.

But Wahome said: "It would be premature to rush to give letters and directives without listening to MCAs."

Tuju also dismissed the MCAs' caucus meeting held in Kiambu to make leadership changes. During fighting at the meeting, one leader was hit with a stone on the head.

Wahome said the conflict also arose because Nominated MCAs are "being used to undermine the elected ones".

"The resolution is for the MCAs' caucus and the speaker to agree on how the assembly will be run. Where there is a disagreement, the assembly can vote," she said.

Kigano said feuding factions were wrong to move to court.

" Some grievances will lead to court but before we rush there, we should exhaust any reconciliation mechanisms."

On November 26, a section of Murang'a MCAs almost exchanged blows as they attempted to evict the county assembly clerk.

Led by deputy speaker Samuel Kihurunjo, they accused Chris Kinyanjui of flouting tendering procedures by procuring substandard sports kits and uniforms.

On Tuesday, fistfights rocked the assembly once again after "new" leaders came to occupy "their" offices following the changes in leadership.

On Wednesday, three MCAs were arrested and taken to court after they brawled. They are Kimorori Wempa MCA Amos Murigi, Township's Jecintah Ng'ang'a Kagunduini's Peter Mburu. Arrest orders against other six ward representatives were issued.
