Eighty deaf children have benefited from a Sh700,000 bursary rolled out by the Kenya Society for Deaf Children.

The money will benefit needy deaf children in all the counties.

Chairman Francis Ng’ang’a, while giving the cheques, said the society plans to disburse Sh2 million this year.

He noted that according to their research, only 12,000 of the 300,000 deaf children in the country are in school.

"We need to know why deaf children are not being taken to school. We urge the government to probe this matter. Parents who are refusing to take the children to school should be arrested."

Ng’ang’a also asked the government to provide more teachers for the deaf.

"The ratio should be one teacher for 12 children but there are schools where one teacher has more than 30 deaf children."

He added the society will soon open special schools in Narok and Taita Taveta.

"We want to ensure there is a deaf school in each county," he said.
