A man was charged on Thursday with causing nine deaths through an accident on
Meru-Nkubu road.
Eric Mutwiri, 34, was charged at a Meru court over the accident at Ng'onyi area
that also left five people injured.
Mutwiri faced charges of driving dangerously at the black spot on August 12, 2017 at about 2pm.
He had been driving an Isuzu lorry, registration KCL 205P.
The driver faced nine counts of causing the deaths of
Sarah Gakii, Edward Karuti, Margret Ntundu, Julia Kalai, Jerusha Thirindi, Josphat Mwiti, Susan Kananu, Salome Mukamaua and Ann Mugomuga.
Eight people died at the scene while Mugomuga succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Those who were injured were identified as Agnes Kawira (35), Vincent Mwirigi (23), Charity Mukomaua (55), Eliud Mwenda (33) and Dominic Mwenda (28).
The 10th account concerned driving on the wrong lane "without care or attention and without consideration to other road users".
The prosecution told the court that Mutwiri, a driver with 10 years' experience, hit a matatu on its way from Meru to Nkubu.
The accused denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Monica Maroro and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 and a bond of Sh500,000.
The case will be heard on March 19.
