Lawmaker Benjamin Tayari has scoffed at governor Salim Mvurya, asking him to stop attacking an MCA who introduced the People's Assembly.

The Kinango MP defended Mwavumbo MCA Joseph Ndeme, noting the assemblies directive was issued by NASA boss Raila Odinga.

"MCAs did their duty," he said on Thursday. "Mvurya should keep off MCA Ndeme. As the opposition, NASA MCAs are doing their oversight role. Stop attacking them for approving the People's Assembly."

The governor has, on several occasions, taken issue with the MCA over the matter and accused him and others of undermining his leadership.

Tayari told Mvurya to focus on serving the people instead of engaging in "petty" politics.

"You say the time for politics is over yet every time you speak, you attack fellow leaders. It's time to unite as Kwale people and solve our many problems."

Tayari further noted that nobody has been targeting Mvurya with the aim of causing him to fall as "2022 is far away".

"[Stanley] Ruwa is the speaker. [Suleiman] Dori an MP like me. We are not governors, so he should not focus on us at every public meeting but deliver as he promised," he told a meeting of primary school heads in the constituency, at Kinango Primary School.

Kwale is among 18 counties that have adopted the People's Assembly motion.

The formation of the Peoples’s Assembly was passed in the county despite a heated exchange and a walkout by Jubilee MCAs. County People’s Assemblies and a National People’s Assembly are elements of NASA’s resistance strategy.

Mvurya, a Jubilee Party governor, could not stop the passing of the motion as the Kwale assembly has more than 20 NASA MCAs.

But he says the ward representatives were wrong to approve the legislation as there are more pressing matters to be dealt with in the county.

"You create another assembly which is unlawful yet the issues of Kwale have not been dealt with. Was that the reason you were elected?" he asked them in December last year.

He further warned MCAs that they will not force him to approve any policy "as his executive powers are unique."
