Most parts of the country have been plunged into darkness following a system fault that has caused a massive blackout.

Kenya Power has said the faulty section has been isolated and efforts to restore supply have commenced beginning with Mt. Kenya and Nairobi.

"A power system disturbance has led to the loss of electricity supply in most parts of Nairobi and adjacent areas. We are sorry about that. It is a known issue and we hope to have it fixed as soon as possible," General Manager in charge of networks Daniel Tare said in a statement.

Areas affected by the outage include parts of Nairobi, Mount Kenya, Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley and Coast regions.

In 2016, Several parts of the country suffered power outage following a fault at Gitaru power generation station on River Tana.

Kengen blamed a monkey for the nationwide blackout.

The power generating company said that the monkey fell on one of the transformers at the Gitaru Power Station thus tripping it.

This caused other machines at the power station to trip.

An overload resulting in a loss of more than 180MW from the plant triggered the national blackout.

Gitaru power station is the biggest in terms of installed capacity and can serve a fifth of the country's capacity from its 225 MW peak power generation.

The disruptions saw the service industry that relies on the mains electricity grind to a halt.

Aging infrastructure and reliance on hydro-generated supplies has been blamed for the situation.
