Uasin Gishu county has banned

import and sale of smuggled, illicit alcohol from Uganda.

Governor Jackson Mandago (pictured) said security agencies have launched a crackdown.

He said some people were using Kenya Railways wagons to smuggle in the alcohol. The matter is bein investigated.

Mandago spoke during New Year celebrations in Eldoret. He said fighting drug abuse in the region is a top priority.

“We want to be a sober county this year,”

he said.

yesterday said more than 800 people, including 50 bar operators, have been arrested for consumption and sale of illicit alcohol in Eldoret.

Police impounded alcohol imported from Uganda for distribution in the region during the Christmas season.
