Land ownership conflicts in Tigania East have hindered the commencement of the Sh9 billion KenGen wind power project, Lands PS Nicholas Muraguri has said.

Muraguri said the project will be a game changer for the economy.

He spoke on Thursday during a site assessment of the land for the power project and inspection of the progress of adjudication for Ngaremara-Gambela sections of Tigania East.

"We had made three attempts on land adjudication. We have faced violence and disputes. I am glad to say that that has stopped. They (farmers, land owners) have formed their own committees. It has been agreed to support the exercise and it's successful this time," Muraguri said.

He said land ownership issues have hindered the implementation of the project. "I am glad to announce that surveying work of the project is complete... The Wind mill project is a very important project; it will directly touch the economy of this country and directly bring benefits to the wananchi of this region," Muraguri said.

The project will sit on 18,000 acres.

The PS said the national government has invested more than Sh60 million to carry on a title deeds issuance pilot project within the county.

"This is part of bigger process of issuance of tittle deeds. Currently only thirty per cent of Kenya's land owners have title deeds. We plan to issue 100,000 title deeds in this particular phase in Meru, in this area, we are committed to ensure by December 2019, all land owners have their own title deeds," he said.
